Taxonomy

Collection 1000092 (herbarium acc. no. NYS-F-003339) is Hebeloma velatum. It is the holotype of synonym Hebeloma colvinii var. velatum Peck [as "colvini"] (1897) ["1896"].

Description

Collecting details

Collection 1000092 was collected by C.H. Peck in September 1895 in Rouses Point, New York, UNITED STATES (approx. 44.99°N, 73.36°W, altitude approximately 35 m above sea level - Google maps). The ectomycorrhizal family Salicaceae (genus Populus) was present.
The surrounding habitat was described as not recorded with a substrate of gravelly soil.

Cortina present: yes.
Pileus: 25–65 mm diameter; shape convex, umbonate weakly; margin characters not recorded; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting not recorded; hygrophanous not recorded; colour variation not recorded; with colour at centre dark fawn, ochraceous; and colour at margin not recorded; with remains of universal veil yes.
Lamellae: attachment adnexed; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae 48; tears not recorded; white fimbriate edge present.
Stipe: 40–65 x 5–7 {median} x 5–7 {basal} mm; stipe Q 8.0–8.7; base cylindrical; floccosity fibrillose; rooting no; mycelial chords yes.
Context: texture firm; stipe interior hollow; stipe flesh discolouring from base not recorded; slenderness measure 10.7; smell raphanoid; taste not recorded.

Spores: shape ellipsoid; colour through microscope yellow brown; guttulate not recorded; papillate no; Spore Code: O1; O2; P0; D1.
Basidia: 25.4–27.8 x 7.7–8.9 μm; ave. Q = 3.2; basidia spore nature not recorded.
Cheilocystidia: main shape lageniform, ventricose; special features many collapsed in exsiccata; Cheilocystidia Ratios: A/M = 1.13; A/B = 0.75; B/M = 1.49.
Pleurocystidia: no.
