Jan Vesterholt began studying the genus Hebeloma in the 1980s and in 2000 began a collaboration with Henry Beker. A database, which now underpins this website, was started in 2003 in order to record collections and allow their characters to be compared. Around that time Ursula Eberhardt joined the team and the project began the systematic sequencing of Hebeloma collections to better understand species boundaries. Today, with more than 10,000 records on the database, including collections from all over the world and almost all types, the website provides an interface through which interested parties can access the richness of the information that has been accumulated.
