Collection 1000424 (herbarium acc. no. MICH 10767) is Hebeloma excedens. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma mesophaeum var. bifurcatum A.H. Sm., V.S. Evenson & Mitchel (1983).Description

Collection 1000424 was collected by A.H. Smith (88816) on 31st July 1978 in Pitkin County, Independence Pass (Lost Man Camp), near, Colorado, UNITED STATES (approx. 39.1217°N, 106.625°W, altitude approximately 3200 m above sea level - Google maps). The ectomycorrhizal family Pinaceae (genus Pinus) was present.
The surrounding habitat was described as coniferous, subalpine woodland with a substrate of decomposed litter, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules. Pileus: 15–35 mm diameter; shape umbonate strongly; margin characters fibrillose; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting not recorded; hygrophanous no; colour variation two-colour; with colour at centre cinnamon; and colour at margin not recorded; with remains of universal veil yes.
Lamellae: attachment adnate, adnexed; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae not recorded; tears absent; white fimbriate edge not recorded.
Stipe: 20–25 x 4–5 {median} x 4–5 {basal} mm; stipe Q 5.0; base cylindrical; floccosity fibrillose, pruinose at apex; rooting no; mycelial chords no.
Context: texture firm; stipe interior hollow; stipe flesh discolouring from base yes; slenderness measure 5.1; smell not recorded; taste mild.
