Taxonomy

Collection 1000496 (herbarium acc. no. MICH 10817) is Hebeloma albomarginatum. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma wells-kemptoniae A.H. Sm., V.S. Evenson & Mitchel [as "wells-kemptonae"] (1983).

    Collection 1000496 was collected by V. Wells, P. Kempton (5304), det: A.H. Smith on 16th August 1971 in University Woods, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star County, Alaska, UNITED STATES (approx. 64.8591°N, 147.8246°W, altitude approximately 170 m above sea level - Google maps). The ectomycorrhizal family Pinaceae (genus Picea) was present.

    The surrounding habitat was described as woodland roadside, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules.     According to the GPS data the collection was in the Interior Alaska-Yukon lowland taiga WWF ecoregion The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have divided the world into 867 terrestrial ecoregions.     Pileus: 70–130 mm diameter; shape convex; margin characters fibrillose, involute, reflexed, sulcate; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting no; hygrophanous no; colour variation unicolor; with colour at centre not recorded; and colour at margin not recorded; with remains of universal veil yes.

    Lamellae: attachment adnexed; maximum depth up to 6 mm; number of complete lamellae not recorded; tears visible with naked eye; white fimbriate edge present.

    Stipe: 60–90 x 15–30 {median} x 20–35 {basal} mm; stipe Q 3.0–4.0; base bulbous; floccosity floccose, floccose at apex; rooting not recorded; mycelial chords not recorded.

    Context: texture firm; stipe interior not recorded; stipe flesh discolouring from base not recorded; slenderness measure 2.8; smell none; taste mild.

    Spore deposit colour: brownish olive, yellowish brown.

    Exsiccata: analysis not yet complete.

    Basidia: 28.5–35.3 x 7.8–9.5 μm; ave. Q = 3.6; basidia spore nature not recorded.

    Cheilocystidia: main shape gently clavate, clavate-stipitate, clavate-lageniform or clavate-ventricose; special features not recorded; Cheilocystidia Ratios: A/M = 1.86; A/B = 2.22; B/M = 0.91.

    Pleurocystidia: no.
