Taxonomy

Collection 1000392 (herbarium acc. no. MICH 10754) is Hebeloma albomarginatum. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma insigne A.H. Sm., V.S. Evenson & Mitchel (1983).

    Collection 1000392 was collected by A.H. Smith (89184) on 29th August 1978 in Pitkin, near Snowmass Village, Elk Camp area, Colorado, UNITED STATES (approx. 39.1881°N, 106.9353°W, altitude approximately 2500 m above sea level - Google maps). The ectomycorrhizal family Pinaceae (genera Pinus, Picea and Abies) was present.

    The surrounding habitat was described as coniferous, subalpine woodland streamside, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules.     Cortina present: no.

    Pileus: 50–90 mm diameter; shape convex; margin characters fibrillose; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting no; hygrophanous no; colour variation two-colour; with colour at centre greyish brown; and colour at margin not recorded; with remains of universal veil yes.

    Lamellae: attachment adnexed, emarginate; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae 96; tears visible with naked eye; white fimbriate edge present.

    Stipe: 40–70 x 10–30 {median} x 15–35 {basal} mm; stipe Q 2.3–4.0; base bulbous, cylindrical; floccosity floccose; rooting no; mycelial chords not recorded.

    Context: texture firm; stipe interior superior wick; stipe flesh discolouring from base not recorded; slenderness measure 2.5; smell not recorded; taste mild.

    Spore deposit colour: brownish olive.

    Exsiccata: analysis not yet complete.

    Spores: shape amygdaloid, limoniform; colour through microscope brown; guttulate no; papillate very strongly; Spore Code: O4; P2; D4.

    Basidia: 29.7–35.4 x 7.5–9.6 μm; ave. Q = 3.8; basidia spore nature not recorded.

    Cheilocystidia: main shape gently clavate, lageniform, ventricose; special features conglutinate; Cheilocystidia Ratios: A/M = 1.48; A/B = 1.87; B/M = 0.95.

    Pleurocystidia: no.

    Ixocutis: epicutis thickness (measured from exsiccata) 130 μm; ixocutis maximum hyphae width 7 μm; ixocutis hyphae encrustation no; shape of trama elements beneath subcutis cylindrical, ellipsoid, thickly sausage-shaped up to 14 μm wide.

    Caulocystidia: caulocystidia maximum length 95 μm.
