Taxonomy

Collection 1000432 (herbarium acc. no. MICH 5553) is Hebeloma mesophaeum. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma mesophaeum var. subobscurum A.H. Sm., V.S. Evenson & Mitchel (1983).

    Collection 1000432 was collected by A.H. Smith (46587) on 23rd August 1954 in Heavens Gate, Seven Devils Mountains , Idaho, UNITED STATES (approx. 45.3688°N, 116.4938°W, altitude approximately 2500 m above sea level - Google maps). No ectomycorrhizal plants were recorded.

    The surrounding habitat was described as coniferous, subalpine woodland, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules.     Lamellae: attachment adnexed; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae 44; tears absent; white fimbriate edge weak.

    Stipe: 40–60 x 3–9 {median} x 3–9 {basal} mm; stipe Q 6.7–13.3; base cylindrical; floccosity fibrillose; rooting no; mycelial chords no.

    Context: texture firm; stipe interior not recorded; stipe flesh discolouring from base yes; slenderness measure 12.9; smell raphanoid weakly; taste raphanoid weakly.
