Taxonomy

Collection 1000087 (herbarium acc. no. NYS-F-001411) is Hebeloma mesophaeum. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma gregarium Peck (1897) ["1896"].

Description

Collecting details

Collection 1000087 was collected by C.H. Peck in October 1895 in Albany County, Bethlehem, Delmar, New York, UNITED STATES (approx. 42.62°N, 73.83°W, altitude approximately 65 m above sea level - Google maps). No ectomycorrhizal plants were recorded.
The surrounding habitat was described as heathland with a substrate of sandy soil, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules. Pileus: 20–40 mm diameter; shape convex, umbonate weakly; margin characters involute, smooth; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting not recorded; hygrophanous not recorded; colour variation two-colour; with colour at centre not recorded; and colour at margin not recorded; with remains of universal veil yes.
Lamellae: attachment adnate; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae 48; tears not recorded; white fimbriate edge not recorded.
Stipe: 40–55 x 2–5 {median} x 2–5 {basal} mm; stipe Q 11.0–16.0; base cylindrical; floccosity pruinose at apex; rooting not recorded; mycelial chords not recorded.
Context: texture firm; stipe interior hollow, stuffed; stipe flesh discolouring from base not recorded; slenderness measure 23.6; smell raphanoid weakly; taste not recorded.

Spores: shape ellipsoid; colour through microscope yellow; guttulate not recorded; papillate no; Spore Code: O1; P1; D0.
Basidia: 21.2–26.2 x 4.8–6.9 μm; ave. Q = 3.9; basidia spore nature not recorded.
Cheilocystidia: main shape lageniform, ventricose; special features not recorded; Cheilocystidia Ratios: A/M = 1.11; A/B = 0.64; B/M = 1.76.
Pleurocystidia: no.
Ixocutis: epicutis thickness (measured from exsiccata) 90 μm; ixocutis maximum hyphae width 5 μm; ixocutis hyphae encrustation yes; shape of trama elements beneath subcutis isodiametric.
