Taxonomy

Collection 1000429 (herbarium acc. no. MICH 10773) is Hebeloma alpinicola. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma mesophaeum var. insipidum A.H. Sm., V.S. Evenson & Mitchel (1983).

Description

Collecting details

Collection 1000429 was collected by A.H. Smith (88791) on 30th July 1978 in Pitkin, Frying Pan River , Colorado, UNITED STATES (approx. 39.3713°N, 106.9264°W, altitude approximately 2500 m above sea level - Google maps). No ectomycorrhizal plants were recorded.
The surrounding habitat was described as subalpine woodland clearing with a substrate of soil, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules. Macroscopic description
Cortina present: yes.
Pileus: 15–40 mm diameter; shape umbonate; margin characters involute; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting not recorded; hygrophanous yes; colour variation two-colour; with colour at centre clay-buff; and colour at margin not recorded; with remains of universal veil yes.
Lamellae: attachment adnate; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae 48; tears absent; white fimbriate edge not recorded.
Stipe: 30–45 x 3–4 {median} x 3–4 {basal} mm; stipe Q 10.0–11.3; base cylindrical; floccosity fibrillose; rooting no; mycelial chords no.
Context: texture firm; stipe interior hollow; stipe flesh discolouring from base yes; slenderness measure 16.3; smell not recorded; taste not recorded.
Spore deposit colour: yellowish brown.
Exsiccata: analysis not yet complete.

Microscopic description
Spores: shape ellipsoid, ovoid; colour through microscope not recorded; guttulate not recorded; papillate no; Spore Code: O1; P0; D0.
Basidia: 25.1–28.0 x 7.3–7.9 μm; ave. Q = 3.5; basidia spore nature not recorded.
Cheilocystidia: main shape lageniform, ventricose; special features basal thickening, septa, yellow contents; Cheilocystidia Ratios: A/M = 0.99; A/B = 0.64; B/M = 1.61.
Pleurocystidia: no.
