Collection 1000423 (herbarium acc. no. MICH 10766) is Hebeloma alpinicola. It is the holotype of heterotypic synonym Hebeloma mesophaeum var. aspenicola A.H. Sm., V.S. Evenson & Mitchel (1983).Description

Collection 1000423 was collected by A.H. Smith (90194) on 2nd September 1979 in Sam's Knob, Snowmass Village, Pitkin, Burnt Mountain, Colorado, UNITED STATES (approx. 39.2129°N, 106.9196°W, altitude approximately 2450 m above sea level - Google maps). The ectomycorrhizal family Salicaceae (genus Populus) was present.
The surrounding habitat was described as subalpine grassland hillside, corresponding to the IUCN habitat We map from the collector's description of the habitat to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s definition using a standardised set of rules. Pileus: 15–20 mm diameter; shape umbonate broadly, umbonate strongly; margin characters fibrillose, involute; viscosity tacky when moist; spotting not recorded; hygrophanous no; colour variation two-colour; with colour at centre brownish olive; and colour at margin pinkish buff; with remains of universal veil yes.
Lamellae: attachment adnate; maximum depth not recorded; number of complete lamellae 42; tears absent; white fimbriate edge weak.
Stipe: 30–50 x 3–5 {median} x 3–5 {basal} mm; stipe Q 10.0; base cylindrical; floccosity fibrillose; rooting no; mycelial chords no.
Context: texture firm; stipe interior not recorded; stipe flesh discolouring from base yes; slenderness measure 22.5; smell not recorded; taste not recorded.
